More info: Kubin was born in Bohemia, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He had a troubled childhood and attempted suicide at the age of 19. He studied art in Munich, where he discovered the works of Odilon Redon, James Ensor, and Max Klinger, who inspired him to create his own imaginative and grotesque visions. He suffered a mental breakdown in 1903, which affected his style and themes.

In 1906, he moved to a secluded estate, where he spent most of his life. He became associated with the Blaue Reiter group of artists, and exhibited with them in 1912 and 1913. He also published his novel The Other Side in 1909, which was praised by Franz Kafka and Thomas Mann. He continued to produce drawings, watercolors, and lithographs until his death in 1959.

Alfred Kubin illustrated many books by authors such as Edgar Allan Poe and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. He lived in a castle in Zwickledt, Upper Austria from 1906 until his death on August 20, 1959. Kubin received several awards and honors for his work, such as the City of Vienna Prize for Visual Arts in 1950. His works are held in many museums and collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
