Utagawa Kuniyoshi created a famous woodblock print series titled "The 47 Ronin," also known as "Chūshingura" or "The Treasury of Loyal Retainers." This series, produced between 1847 and 1848, narrates the historical tale of the Ako incident, a true story from Japanese history that occurred in the early 18th century.
The narrative revolves around a group of 47 masterless samurai, or ronin, who sought to avenge the death of their lord, Asano Naganori. Asano had been forced to commit seppuku (a form of ritual suicide) due to an altercation with a court official named Kira Yoshinaka. The ronin, led by Oishi Kuranosuke, spent years planning and carrying out their vendetta against Kira.
