The story of how Bodhidharma became associated with the Japanese Daruma doll is not entirely clear, but it probably happened over a period of several centuries. Some sources suggest that the practice of using a Daruma doll to set goals and track progress dates back to the Edo period in Japan (1603-1868), and that Bodhidharma became associated with the doll as a symbol of perseverance and resilience.

Over time, the Daruma doll came to be connected with various Japanese legends and stories about Bodhidharma, such as the tale of his legendary nine-year meditation in a cave. The doll also became a popular symbol of good luck, and is often used as a motivational tool to help individuals achieve their goals.

Bodhidharma is a legendary figure in the history of Buddhism who is said to have been the founder of the Chan (Zen) sect of Buddhism. The story of Bodhidharma is steeped in myth and legend, but it is generally believed that he lived in the 5th or 6th century CE and traveled from India to China to spread the teachings of the Buddha.

According to legend, Bodhidharma was a prince in southern India who renounced his royal position to become a Buddhist monk. He is said to have traveled to China, where he was welcomed by the Emperor Wu of Liang, who was known for his patronage of Buddhism.

Bodhidharma is also said to have founded the Shaolin Monastery, which became known as a center of martial arts and Chan Buddhism. He is said to have taught a form of meditation that emphasized direct insight into the nature of reality, rather than the study of texts or doctrines.

One of the most famous legends about Bodhidharma is the story of his nine-year meditation in a cave. According to this legend, Bodhidharma sat facing a wall in a cave for nine years, meditating on the nature of reality. When he emerged from the cave, he was said to have founded the Shaolin Monastery and transmitted the teachings of the Buddha to his disciples.

Bodhidharma is also associated with a number of famous sayings and teachings, including the famous phrase "a special transmission outside the scriptures; no dependence on words and letters; direct pointing to the mind of man; seeing into one's nature and attaining Buddhahood."
