One of the most famous legends about Bodhidharma is the story of his nine-year meditation in a cave. According to this legend, Bodhidharma sat facing a wall in a cave for nine years, meditating on the nature of reality. When he emerged from the cave, he was said to have founded the Shaolin Monastery and transmitted the teachings of the Buddha to his disciples.
